Research and Development

In the interest of our clients we continuously expand our technology in the field of semantics. For this purpose we cooperate very close with leading research organizations and companies. Our goal is to interlink academic research with business needs.

GeoKnow, an EU FP7 funded project with a duration of 3 years, recently started according to schedule in December 2012. Its goal is to research geospatial data, in particular, the integration and linking of such data from different domains, scalable reasoning over billions of geographic features within the Linked Data Web and the efficient crowd-sourcing and collaborative authoring of geographic information. GeoKnow’s aim is to simplify information seeking by allowing exploration, editing and interlinking of heterogeneous sources with spatial dimensions. The research project will develop open source tools which will help users, companies and government organizations to expose and utilize structured geospatial information on the Web.

The project is divided into 8 work packages. WP 1–4 focus on research and development activities, WP5 and WP6 are concerned with the integration into our application scenarios and the validation of our results, and WP7 and WP8 focus on dissemination/exploitation and the efficient management of the overall GeoKnow project.

Partners of Ontos in the consortium are: the Institute of Applied Computer Science, University of Leipzig, Germany; Unister GmbH, Germany; OpenLink Software, UK; BROX IT-Solutions GmbH, Germany; and Athena Research and Innovation Center, Greece.

LOD Russia

This project has started in 2011 and is focusing on the aggregation of scientific research papers in Russia. The project is focusing on research topics around information extraction using state of the art natural language processing techniques, multilingual and cross lingual merging of extracted information as well on topics related to high performance of triple store based on RDF. The duration of the project which is funded by the Russian ministry is 600 days and will include 3 major milestones of delivery. First milestone is dedicated to academic review and state of the art methods for improvements. Second stage is dedicated to specify details of algorithms, methods and software specifications. Last stage is based on the development of prototypes that show hos those technologies can be used. Involved partners are University of Leipzig (AKSW group), W3C/ERCIM, Higher School of Economics and AviComp Services in Moscow.

Extract of Completed Projects

NanoTrack

In close cooperation with the institute of nanotechnology we have developed a portal based on MediWiki that aggregated news, blogs, foras from the world of nano science. A special ontology/taxonomy was developed in order to cover all objects from the nano technology vocabulary. The automatic process of aggregation and extraction of objects was based on the Ontos Semantic Framework and OntosMiner (NLP Engine). At the end of the research project it was possible to analyse the collected data by some simple Business Intelligence Reports.
